FORMATION CHALLENGE

In the spirit of this years ARS motto, Blueprint to Excellence, this years Formation Challenge will harken back to the early days allowing established teams to demonstrate their highly disciplined and precision routines, as well as allow new teams the opportunity to showcase their abilities.
Formation flight is one of the foundations of the Red Star Pilots Association and the All Red Star event.  All Red Star is the premier training venue for this training and displaying this skill.  Years past have seen variations on the goals for conquering the coveted Formation Challenge title.

THE CHALLENGE
Gather a team of pilots from your local area, or assemble one at the event to present a 12-15 minute demonstration over the airfield.  There are a few compulsory maneuvers, but there is plenty of room for free-style.  Demonstrate your flying excellence to your friends and win the custom piston clock for each of your team members!

The format of this years challenge will come with two parts compulsory and free-style.  Two passes will be compulsory for demonstration of basic skills.  The rest of the demonstration is the teams choice, allowing the pilots to really show the judges their stuff.  Order of the passes and how you get from one formation to another is the teams choice.  The routine will be scored on all aspects of your performance.

  1. Create your team.  4-Plane formations are the default size, but 3 or 5 planes will work as well.
  2. Plan your mission.   Success will start with a good plan.  Scoring is based solely on execution, but that cant happen with a thorough preflight plan.  All maneuvers executed must have been practiced thus it is recommended that you practice prior to arriving at All Red Star.  More than a preparation practice flight at All Red Star detracts from the training mission for our new pilots that need IPs and lead pilots.
  3. Scored elements.   Described on the scoring sheet.  Safety trumps all in this event.
  4. Emphasis
    1. Safety
    2. Professionalism
    3. Style / Creativity / Showmanship

NOTE:
All maneuvers must be in accordance with FAST and FAA regulations.  Lead pilot must submit a routine to the judges prior to the flight.  Safety is paramount, unsafe maneuvers, at the judgment of the airboss, are grounds for disqualification or early termination of the routine.  Most importantly, go out and have fun!!!
